This essay contains some of Freud's ideas on magic and the magical object (fetish).
I find Freud most interesting when he is acting as a commentator on other writer's work, indulging his impressive literary sensibilities. If his conclusions need not be taken *very* seriously, what and where his attention focuses on is frequently worth thinking about, elaborating upon with the help of other writers as well as Freud's own sources and digesting (rather than itemizing).
A caveat that needs to be repeated more: The Grand Theory element of his work is Victorian, decidedly not scientific and deservedly suspect.
